Phenomenal Woman of the Week #9: Meet Aphiwe!
21 years old
3. Where are you from?
I’m from a small town in South Africa called Durban.
4. Describe yourself in 3 words.
Wow, just three words? This is probably one of the most difficult questions I’ve had to answer about myself. But I think I’ll go for the words ‘ambitious, loving and classy.’
5. Explain why you chose those 3 words:
I chose those three words, because I think they best summarize my personality. I decided on the word ‘ambitious’ because I love challenging and pushing myself to be the best version of me that I can be. Secondly ‘loving’ because I want to attempt to make the world a bit more bearable by spreading love. Finally I chose the word ‘classy’ because it is the one word I could think of to somehow describe my love for mimosas and picnics.
6. What is something that you are passionate about?
I am passionate about a lot of social issues but feminism is something that stands out for me as issue I will forever be passionate about. It is important for us as young women to be the voices that lead the change in the society we live in, so our daughters in the future aren’t undermined and made to feel inferior for being a woman. As a society and the females of this 21st century our mission is far from done. Women from past decades have managed to unlock many doors for gender equality and now it up to us to start opening these doors. I just don’t understand why I, as a woman can’t have access to free sanitary pads and tampons, but a man has access to free condoms. Why should the shedding of my uterus come at a price? And at an expensive one for that matter, we want free tampons and sanitary pads! So yes, I guess you can tell I’m pretty passionate about feminism.
7. Who is the most phenomenal woman you know? Why?
I cannot simply list one phenomenal woman, I know so many strong-headed, independent and ambitious women who have shaped the woman I have become today. However my mother and my sister are probably the two phenomenal women I know because they gave me the foundation I needed to be my own phenomenal woman.
8. What does being a phenomenal woman mean to you?
It means being a woman who is comfortable in her own skin and encourages other women to reach their full potential as well through the means of self-love. Also she is a woman that respects and inspires other women, not seeing them as her enemies but as her support system.
Thank you so much to Veronica for giving me this platform on your blog, I really appreciate it. It has been an absolute honor and privilege.
